I'm new to Linux. I downloaded Mandrake 8.0 and have it installed along with Win98.
As I'm reading through the posted messages I found that there are a lot of programs and terms that are foreign to me. I would like to learn more about the enter-workings of the Linux OS and the programs that accompany it. Does anyone know of any good books?

Thx

Have you checked the bookshelf? (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/bookshelf/bs-1.html) I really recommend Running Linux by O'reilly, it's a great book and almost every Linux user I know has it.

There is a plethora of information on the net for free about linux. I personally hate reading stuff on the internet, but it has helped me so I muddle through it. Also, a lot of stuff is downloadable in .pdf format and if you have a printer and some cash for ink and don't mind killing a few trees, you could print off a few key documents.

A good place to start is the Linux-Mandrake homepage. They have an installation and configuration manual. Then you can look through the How-To's. Type Linux Tutorial into a search engine like Google and you will get some great stuff.

Just some freebie ideas for a newbie.

just about any of the o'reilly books are good. go to www.oreilly.com (http://www.oreilly.com) or your local barns and noble or borders or something like that....and if you want something mandrake specific you might try their website www.mandrake.com. (http://www.mandrake.com.)

Aside from the 8.0 manuals that you have (I have the same, and wish I did a coupel years ago when I started with linux.) After those, I recommend the O'Reilly series, depending on what your specific interests are. After buying other, cheaper, books, I which I would have spent the cash on them first.

Also, for online systems, is good rute.sourceforce.net (http://rute.sourceforge.net/)

I know a good resource for MDK users (and linux newbies of all shapes and colors) can be found at mandrakeuser.org (http://www.mandrakeuser.org).

Some good books I've found and recommend:

UNIX System Administration Handbook
Nemeth, Snyder, Seebass, Hein
Prentice Hall
ISBN: 0130206016

UNIX Power Tools
Oreilly, Peek, Loukides
Oreilly
ISBN: 1565922603

Anything else by Oreilly

Of course there are lots of HOWTOS and FAQS at linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org) too!!
