Library Questions

Ok just a few quick questions.. can someone tell me what:

glibc is.. what the differences are between versions etc.

libc - same as above

And on slack 7.1, when I use autoslack, it installs the new glibc and then bamm, i cant run anything. Is that common (I am back to Debian.. Debian is much better anyways :)
