I have just installed the latest version of Mandrake, and things haven't worked exactly as expected. I was curious what everyone's opinion was concerning the best linux distro.

There seems to be a new topic on this every week, but if you must know:

Democracy: Two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner.
Constitutional Republic: Same as above, but lamb's not on the menu (unless the wolves are really hungry).

With my experience with distros (I've tried almost every one except Slack) Mandrake is all around the best, especially for newbies. Things never work the way they're supposed to all the time, get used to it. Just look at other user's posts and you'll find that people have problems with almost every distro. Mandrake is just a better at getting everything working for the newbie. When I installed Mandrake it took me a month before I got everything working the way I wanted it to. But now it does. And I'm happy. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I used to think that. But having a distro that does less "behind the scenes" stuff (which Mandrake does) and sticks more to standard Linux stuff makes things oh so much simpler to customize and to fix when things go wrong. Soon my system will work the way I want it to.

I am not familiar with the Best Linux distro - but there is a link to it under "Distributions" on www.linux.org (http://www.linux.org) - no kidding.

Anyway, please read the distro choice NHF - this is a repeatedly asked question.

Best Linux 2000 R3 is from Finland and is based on RedHat. Apparently most popular distro in Finland right now.

Bah. Linux From Scratch (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/) is the way to go for me. I can't count the number of unexplained failed compiles I've had happen in Mandrake, but in LFS everything has worked for me. Even now after package updates have made things less screwy, I still can't compile xmms from source in Mandrake without it locking up the system hard when I run it (as an unprivileged user, believe it or not). Besides, you learn a lot more when you build the whole thing yourself.
