I have a 15" monitor on my Linux box and a cheapo video card. I have it set to 800x600 resolution and I can actually READ things.
However...WHY do some of the programs REFUSE to be resized so that I can EVEN see the buttons?
I recall that this is one of the things that made me give up on Linux almost 10 years ago.
It seems that by now they would have fixed this...

What window manager?
Is that they refuse to resize even though you hit the resize button on the titlebar?

Um, Linux wasn't around ten years ago. Hate to break it to ya, but it came out in 1991, and no one used it as their main OS for a few years.
What programs are you talking about? Sounds to me like your issue isn't with Linux, but with the programs you are using.

Excuse me but "almost ten years ago" would be about 1991. I never said it was popular then...then again, maybe I'm confusing it with another OS???
Anyway...In particular "Gnome" control panel and a couple others
I try to drag the side smaller and it doesn't work.

I don't think that the X system worked for Linux until at earliest two or three years later, and even then, it probably didn't run many programs. Linux hit the mainstream really about 3-4 years ago, so saying ten years is a bit much. Maybe you are thinking of OS/2 (Warp) or something.

Could be...all I remember is that it was about some new OS and the GUI was just coming around.
I don't remember reformatting any drives so I guess it wasn't Linux.
It's been a long time ago...
Anyway...I just tried and Gnome control panel won't resize for my screen. There's a few otheer screens (Linuxconf for instance) that I can't even SEE the "Accept" buttons, etc. in...
How in the owrld are you supposed to do anything when you can't even get to the buttons?
The only thing I've had to do in a couple cases is shut the power down and reboot.
