I'm trying to install mandrake using this procedure (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/faq/faqw.py?req=all#6.11) and it requires that I get a shell so I can type commands before install continues. However, during mandrake 8 install, i can't seem to get a shell. Alt-f1 is the install, alt-f3 is errors, alt-f4 kernel stuff. the rest dont seem to do anything.
Does anyone know how to get a shell during mandrake install?

Those look like instructions to install linux FROM linux....
You sound as though you're installing linux from windows... so those instructions hardly apply to you.
AKT+F2 pops up the "Run Command" which is sort of like a terminal, but it only lets you execute one command before closing (and doesn't show any output), on this linux box anyway.
My suggestion? Use the installation procedure that comes with your install files... it's in there. look for a tutorials folder, or index.html or something like that.

well.. i'm trying to install linux from a FAT partiton, which is what the FAQ i linked to was about. As for ALT-f2, it just doesnt seem to do anything, in whatever limited linux the computer is running off of the boot disk.
