If so then how well does it work with Linux?

I'm putting together a new box and I'm debating between this and the much cheaper Matrox G450 Dual (32Mb).

Guillemot $365
Matrox $167
Big difference, but you get what you pay for.

The Guillemot has twice the memory and a faster Core speed, Memory Speed and RAMDAC speed. The Guillemot runs off of a GForce 2 GTS chipset which *I THINK* is Linux compatable. Is this true?

Or is this just overkill? I want to be able to have a triple boot box with 98/NT/ and Linux. So I'll be playing games in 98 and working in Linux with NT around for my consulting gig.

I want Unreal to stop looking like a pretty slide show. When I move I want the view to move. When the thugs shoot their rockets at me I want to see where they're coming from. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for your opinions.

I have one!
It works in Linux... you just need the drivers for it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
UT runs very nice with it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Were those the standard Nvidia drivers for Linux?

Overall were you happy that you spent that kind of money on your video card or do you think it's overkill? I mean:

Abit KT7 motherboard = $140
AMD 900Mhz Athlon = $208

The vid card is more expensive than the mobo and CPU combined!!!

F.Y.I

unless your planning on playing games and such at resolutions over 1280x1024 the 64 meg version will not yeild much more performance than the 32 meg version, thats why i bought a 32 meg, and its cheaper

I got my 3D Prophet II from a Guillemot/Hercules distributor so money wasn't that much of an issue http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I was sharing my windows box with my linux drive for a while, and I did get it to work. I was using Mandrake 7.1 though so I had to go from the SRPM but it worked great. You can do it entirely form console if you follow the directions on the NVidia website.

Cool! They're pricey as all hell, but I'm not skimping anywhere else on this new box so why start here?

Thanks

I'm trying to get my set up working with the Geforce II Prophet II 64.... can I just use the Nvidia drivers ?? Please list the drivers you are using?

As for the Card it self, it's far better built than the 32mb. And even though the high screen resolutions will show it's true strength, that isn;t just the benefit. It's overclockable... and from the things I have seen, awesome.

If you really want to spend more money, go for a geforce Ultra.... I think nvidia are going to start releasing chipsets as often as craptel (intel) release mhz chips, i.e. every 200 mhz or whatever!!! Ack....

Well, spending more money really isn't my "goal". http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

In fact I'm wondering if I this is where I could cut some cost. $365 is jsut a whopping big chunk of the budget.
