Help with a compile problem

Could someone here direct their programming guru-ness at this thread (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=014773) on the Tech Support forum? I think I've got some idea of where the poster's problem lies, but as I said in my response to the post, I can't program my way out of a coffee cup, so I'm sure they would welcome some more experienced input.
