first:
after I log in I get that 5 or 6 line message about Debian coming as is and something about the lisence. Is there anyway to remove that or at least change it to say something else?

second:
I'm not in front of my machine right now so I can't remember the exact wording, but when I get to a login prompt it says someting like:

Debian 2.2 {hostname}
user:

The thing is, I compiled 2.4.6 kernel and the new kernel is definitely running, but it still reads 2.2 - anyway to change that?

Thanks,
cotfessi

/etc/motd will change the message.

As for the banner I completely forget. I think it might be /etc/debian_version.

Debian 2.2 {hostname}
user:

I believe that is the Debian version number not the kernel number

yes, that is the debian version, your kernel version should be printed after login
