hello
im currently using Mandrake 7.0 with release 2.2.14-15mdk. my question is if i can recompile it to the latest 2.3.x /.4.x?, or do i need to take it up through all the kernels to get to the latest?

No, just goto www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org) and get the latest *stable* kernel (2.3.18 AFAIK). Then go over to the kernel NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernel_update.html) and read carefully. You can always keep you current kernel installed and use lil o to pick which one to boot. This helps alot if you fubar a new kernel.
Added during edit:
If the 'make oldconfig' command fails, you can use make xconfig to get a nice gui version to configure your new kernel. Also another NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernelcomp.html) contain a bit more details (including some make *config details)
Good luck!

Until I upgraded to Mandrake 7.2, I ran 2.4.0-test10 under Mandrake 7.0 without problems, even though the test kernels of 2.4 are "development." The 2.4 kernels boot MUCH faster than the 2.2's.
I didn't have any problems, but then again, I might have just been lucky.
There's a great NHF here that walks you through installing and compiling a new kernel, while retaining your old one as well. I'd sugest using it as a guideline.
