Did you look in the Device Manager?

You dont necessarily have to know the cards RAMDAC or anything else about it; some distros now (Mandrake, Redhat) automagically probe and configure your vid card at install time (this of course depends on if it's a supported card, and most popular cards on the market are supported). What kind of machine / card is it?

well it's a year old Diamond Monster Fusion. it's one of diamond's legacy graphics cards. i'm not sure of the difference between their legacy or regular graphics cards, but i know it wasn't support by windows ME. doesn't necessarily mean linux won't like it but....do you know offhand if this particular card is supported?
