Hey Im new to Debian and Im trying to get a handle on apt-get. One of the programs I use alot is Gaim but the one included with this version of Debian is old and I want the newest one. What do I need to type to get apt-get to get it?
I did get an updated version once already , but only after updating a hundred other pkg's.

Just do this
apt-get install gaim
that will download and install the newest one it finds. Unless of course it says that you've already got the newest one. Then you've got to do this first then try the install
apt-get update

Hey, i tried that and after apt-get update, apt-get install gaim, it said I already had the latest release installed.
I did d'load the tar.gz file for gaim-0.10.3 and did the whole tar -zxvf thing but I still see gaim-0.9.20.
stumped. too rpm dependent I think.

also, can I add whatever ftp site I want to /etc/apt/sources.list? Or does it have to be some kind of deb specific site?
You are using Storm right? Storm is based on Debian 2.2 potato. To get the latest packages you would have to get apt pointed at Debian's
woody unstable. Storm will upgrade to woody if you change your souces.list. Here is a link to stable and unstable packages, might want to bookmark it.

You need to add deb specific sites in /etc/apt/sources.list, as you yourself have suggested. Any others will causes nothing but errors.
Craig's monster list is included in this thread : http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/006874.html

If you are thinking of upgrading to woody you might want to wait a week or two.... a little buggy at the moment.
