I'm thinking about breaking down and buying Slackware 7.1 I noticed that the package comes with 4 CD-ROM's, I'm gonna be using a 4.3GB HD and I was wondering if 4.3GB of space will be enough. And is a newer version of Slackware gonna be coming out soon? Because if it is, I'll just wait and buy that. And last, is Slack really hard to learn? I've been using Linux for years but because I don't use it enough (I'm a gamer so I'm stuck to windows http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/tongue.gif ) I don't know a whole lot about Linux. So would a semi-newbie find great difficulty with Slack or is it not very different from the other distros?

Nope, Slack is wonderful, and you will do fine with it. You only need one cd, and a "install it all" only takes 997mb. The extra cd's are contribs, sources, and docs.
BTW - I play Quake2 and Quake3, SoF, UT, Descent3d, and HeavyGear2 just fine in Linux - Slackware 7.1 to be specific...

Slack is great. Don't worry about all the CD's. Only one or two are important. One is the install, and the other just has a few goods like XMMS and AbiWord, and even imwheel.
Slack 7.1 came out last July, and it is very recent considering the extremely Slow release schedules of Slack (and Debian for that matter). Don't worry though, it supports the latest and greatest (almost). It does come with XFree86 4 as well as kernel 2.2.16 (almost current)
Give it a shot. I did, and personally, I would probably never willingly use Mandrake again. Slack isn't hard, especially if you have been using linux for any reasonable amount of time. Once you learn the installer and set X up, it will all be good. This distro seems to be more tweakable than other distros, probably because it doesn't come with XConfigurator and DrakeConf.
I have it installed on 2GB of my HD, and that is just enough (i did a full install), and I regularly play Q3 and UT on Linux (and Tribes II pretty soon!). Don't worry, Slack is all good, and it just seems to work better than other distros. You can't go wrong http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

4.3 gigs is more than enough. Slackware is a great distribution, and it might be a pain at first to get everything in order, but once you do, you'll love it. Regarding waiting for the next version, don't worry and get 7.1, its far from obsolete because you can upgrade it quite easily and get and use all the latest stuff thats found in any other distribution from the ftp in the current /contrib or from www.linuxmafia.org. (http://www.linuxmafia.org.) Also the distro is quite clean so upgrading goes pretty smooth.

Yeah, but sadly you can't play Half-Life, Midtown Madness 2, or Baldur's Gate 2 on Linux. At least not at the moment.

Tribes 2 for Linux, now that sounds SWEEEEEET!!
I just switched to Storm Linux from Mandrake and I love it, but I do have that Slack 7.1 disk right here lookin at me. hehe
Tried it awhile back but was too stupid to get it to work right. Kept getting that damn "Li" error.
Maybe next time it'll work for me. Maybe I'll like it then. I just want to find out what the fuss is about. In the mean time..Debian is cool as hell!! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Does anybody know where I can get a cheap, reatail copy of Slackware? I think $30 for it is a little pricy for Linux.

Or, if you can handle a 65mb download, you can get Peanut Linux - it is a small Slackware install, so you would just want/need to add packages that you could get as-needed. Also, don't forget to check at your library - they may have books to checkout that contain CD's - or even just cd's.

Xprotocol, I can burn you a copy of Slack 7.1 if ya want. I'm havin a bit of trouble gettin Slack to install right on my system but if I can help someone else, thats cool.
Everytime I try to install it, I get either the "Li" error when Lilo try's to start up or recently the Kernel Panic error.
I'll try again in a couple days after a read up on it a bit.
Hey let me know if ya want me to make a copy for you. 3 cd set .
BTW: I am using a friends burner and can get disks for free too! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Usually this is caused by the LINEAR mode not set. Try booting in, editing /etc/lilo.conf and adding the line 'linear' near the top, then rerun 'lilo'.
