This is my first time doing a kernel compile. I am about to recompile to version 2.4.7, and I wanted to know what i should do about sound and video support. I have a soundblaster Live! and an NVIDIA GeForce2MX, running a freshly installed Mandrake 8. Is it possible/desireable to compile these into the kerneL? WHat are my options? Also, since mandrake already recognized my video and sound cards, after i compile (if i don't do anything extra to support the cards) will i still be able to start X windows, and will linux still utilize my sound card?

When you recompile, make sure you know all about your hardware. You'll need it when you run make config. You'll be given a barrage of questions about what you want and should get the option to compile in support for your sound and video card. Just make sure you choose them.

During the compile, you will have to choose what drivers you want installed in the kernel. Under sound and video drivers, it will show you hardware. If it doesn't match exactly, click help for the driver to see what it goes to. Good luck!

I downloaded the newest linux drivers from NVIDIA, is there any way to have the configuration procedure compile support for the downloaded driver tarballs? And what about my SoundBlaster Live as well?

Yes. You should come to these two items during make config. Just chose yes when it asks you if you want to compile in support.
