I'm running Malakin 07-29-2001, 09:54 PM Download the Nvidia drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux The readme there provides information on installing them. Dr. Shim 07-29-2001, 10:03 PM I've installed the drivers, still I can't run any 3D games or screensavers!!! :( Is there anything else I have to download?! tallulah 07-29-2001, 10:11 PM Here is a link that helped me get 3D running: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00022.asp Did you install both the drivers AND the glx? One thing I found is that you MUST change inittab to run level 3. If you choose a graphical login, 3D won't work. At least it didn't for me. Another little glitch I found was that I had to be root to run the game. I am thinking this may have something to do with permissions and resolution settings, but I don't know for certain. Try a text login as root to see if perhaps it is working. That's my only suggestion. :) [ 29 July 2001: Message edited by: jane doe ] Dr. Shim 07-29-2001, 10:30 PM Just one morre itty bitty question. I have to modify this configuration file, but I can't save it changes cause I have the wrong permissions, how do I make myself the 'root' while editing the file? I did it in the Terminal but it still wouldn't let me... tallulah 07-29-2001, 11:08 PM You can just log in as root, open the file with a text editor, and save it (if X is working). Otherwise, if you are logged into a regular account in the console mode, just type su and hit enter. Then fill in the root password and hit enter. Now type vim /etc/inittab to open it with vim. Change the line that says "id:5:initdefault" to "id:3:initdefault". You then have to hit escape (either once or twice, I forgot), shift and : so that you can type w for write (ie save). Shift : q will let you quit the editor. I thought it was easiest to just log in graphically as root, makes sure my XF486Config-4 file was correct, edit inittab with a text editor, save, and reboot. The next time, then, I had to log in with a text prompt. After you're are logged in, you can type startx, launching your default window manager. There is a file in /etc/sysconfig/ called desktop that lists your default window manager in all caps. One word all caps. I changed mine from KDE to BLACKBOX so that I would get my preferred environment. It can be frustrating to get sent to an environment you don't prefer. (I hope the instructions are fairly accurate as I am writing them rather from the top of my head!) Hope it gets 3D going for you! You'll have to provide us with some more info then. What distro are you using? Try typing "gears" at a command line, what error are you getting? You could also give us the output of "xpdyinfo" and "glxinfo" Domin 07-30-2001, 01:17 AM I'm having this problem also. I did what you said but it doesn't work. When I type gears I get: gears: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.so.3: undefined symbol: glXQueryExtension justlinux.com
