I use to have linux mandrake a while ago but ended up deleteing it since I couldn't get it to work with my RR cable.

Anyone that has RR cable could you outline the steps that I have to do to get linux to work with DHCP and cable. I am familar with the set up process so you can reference parts of it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

as odd as it sounds I have drake 8, and ever sice i started with 7.2, my AT home cable is DHCP as well, I setup with DHCP and added the IP i was givin by the ISP and have had no probs with it. try that and see what happens.

I have had no problems getting my RR connection to work with Mandrake (since 7.1 days). Now, let's see how good my memory is. :)

After the packages are installed, the network setup kicks in. It sees my 3com NIC and gives me three or four options to choose (Static IP, Cable/DSL, Dial-up, DHCP ... oh, I forget what they say now). I think I use the DHCP option and not the cable/DSL one (again, I might be remembering incorrectly). I just follow the prompts only entering a bogus host name (Gnome will probably complain about that hostname later ... I haven't figured out where that setting in Gnome lies). And everything works from that point forward.

Alright, Thanks for the help. I'll do the install later today and come back and report. :)

I'm having similar problems. I have Cable (Rogers @Home) and I can't connect to the Internet from Mandrake.

So my first question would be: Do I have to install the software on Mandrake?

Can you not use the online documentation (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/80/en/user.html/draknet.html) to get it configured?

I'm on Shaw@Home using Drake 8.0... All I know is that I had to set up my ethernet adaptor properly and everything worked fine. I'm not sure if I actually have DHCP enabled, I think I configured my IP address and such straight into the config.

If you're having trouble with DHCP, boot to windows and load Window's IP config (winipcfg in the run menu), then click on the more info button, and write down everything it says.

Use this information as reference for configuring your network settings in drake, should all work fine.

Ok. That stuff is good.

But I also need to know what to write for things such as my ISP name, and DHCP type.

Arg...

And I have another question.
How should I have installed Mandrake onto my computer? I already had Windows 98 installed, it has been installed and running for over two months now. And now that I install Mandrake (which is supposed to be MUCH better and more stable etc.) I get extreme slowdown sometimes. When I was trying to fix my internet settings, I had to completely shut down my computer to get the windows to display corectly. Windows appearing on top of others would smudge out the windows underneath them. And I really long load times when opening windows. And my KWord crashes CONSTANTLY!

Should I format my drive and re-install Windows then Mandrake? (I keep windows cause I play games like Counter-strike often).

I'm simply confused about it all. Mandrake receives so much acclaim, but yet my Windows works MUCH better right now. It must be me, because it sounds like Manrake is much better.

I am about as new as a newbie can get here (having figured out how to download and install Mandrake 8 to dual-boot with Win98 just last week), and I was about ready to pull my hair out trying to get my cable @Home service running. I found a really good article with step-by-step instructions at www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/distros/mankdrake/athome_setup.html. (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/distros/mankdrake/athome_setup.html.) I would assume the directions would be really similar with other cable companies. I gathered some of the info from winipcf in windows; for the rest I just e-mailed the cable company and told them I was trying to set up a connection under Linux. They sent back everything I needed and then some. The only thing I had to do differently was rather than use the 'manual' setting, I used DHCP. Hope this helps.

I'm still a newbie as well but I do like to play with networks. If your system is DHCP and you find out the address that windows is on then put it into your system you will be hating life shortly. Most DHCP server will change your address every week or two! This is normal for them to do this. Your best bet is to contact your ISP and ask them for a static IP. That way you can stick it in your system and never have to worry about it again.
