i just upgraded to 4.0.2 for sh**s and grins and i used the NVIDIA Geforce driver in the xf86config file and it worked fine, however in order to have hardware acceleration will i have to install the kernel and glx drivers or maybe just the glx driver?

For hardware acceleration you'll have to install both the kernel module and the glx drivers. You'll also have to make some changes to your XF86Config file and rename/remove some mesa files to get openGL working with the Nvidia drivers.

Not sure just what you are asking, but here goes:

If you already installed the NVIDIA kernel and GLX stuff, then upgraded to the new version of XFree86, you should be sitting pretty as you are. No need to reinstall the NVIDIA stuff, though you may need to make changes to the XF86Config(-4) file if you reran the xf86config program.

Clear as mud?
