Well, I have my laptop's slackware 8 install working just fine. The only thing really left to do is to get the sound working, which is proving to be the hardest part. I don't have an internal sound card, but I have a PCMCIA sound blaster compatable (ESS1688). Documents have said that PCMCIA sound cards won't work, and I'm afraid they're right.
My last hope is to use a pc speaker driver to emulate a sound card. The problem here is just that the drivers are so old, they make patches to compile on different kernels, but they stop on 2.4.0-pre. I'm using kernel 2.4.5. Has anybody used these kind of drivers before? Do they work on new kernels like mine?

(Also, if the kernel patch didn't work, would there be a way for me to uninstall it?)
