i'm debating whether or not to get NIS on my network...

what are some advantages/disadvantages?
any suggestions?
horror stories?

NIS is pretty stable and it works. One of its biggest drawbacks is that authentication and data is sent in plain text which makes it extremely susceptible to interception. So if your network is a business I'd recommend something else such as a LDAP based system. If security isn't a big concern then go for it. The few times I've set it up it's relatively easy to configure.
