Hi, first, let me start off by saying that I have read EVERYTHING I could find on the subject to get my cable modem to work in Linux (Red Hat 7.1). I'm pretty new to the OS, been using DOS/Windows for about 13 years now, and I am a programmer, so I'm not really a newbie to computers, just Linux. Anyway, onto the begging...

Basically, my problem is that I have set up everything every possible way that any help/howto file has mentioned. I've been at this for a couple weeks now. I've gotten some progress. My connection is to the point now where I know there's a connection being made with the network, but it stops at @home's network, and no further. FOr those of you who know how @home works, they have "local" mail, news, etc servers that are basically local as inbetween you and the internet, but on their end. I can ping those servers. I get a response back from the actual server [mail.state.home.com] too. However, I can't get anything that's actually on the internet. I can't ping either domain names or IPs. And it's really frustrating. I have both primary and secondary DNS settings entered, I have my local server as the search domain. It just doesn't want to work. And I know I haven't missed any steps in the howto or help because I've literally read them 5 to 10 times each.

If anyone could give me some ideas about what this may be, I'd really appreciate it. I believe it's more than a DNS problem, because I can't even ping IPs outside of the @home network (and my local one at that).

Oh, it's definately a Linux problem. I have a dual boot with Win2k server and that works great. I'm testing Linux in hopes of replacing Windows with Linux as my new server box. And I've tried resetting the modem as well. DHCP is not supported BTW. It's static IP. Provider is Comcast @home in NJ.

Any help would be appreciated enormously! Thanks in advance.

sounds like you don't have a route defined to the internet (gateway at your ISP) ??

compare your routes between the linux and win2k boxes

Do you have a firewall set up, if so, there may be something in your config that is impeeding your DNS. Just an idea...

Good Luck

Thanks guys. It was a gateway problem afterall. You know, in all the howtos and help files, none of them ever said anything about setting the gateway! Well, on top of that, the sheet from my provider doesn't have a gateway address listed, it's blank. I just stuck in the primary DNS server there and I'm on my linux box right now posting this, so that worked.

Well, thank you again for the help. And for the hair that you saved me (what's left of it). hehe Now I'm off to try to get internet/file/printer sharing running with my other Win2k box. :) TTYL guys, you've made my day.
