I have LAN (RHLinux7 / Samba 2.0.7 PC on P133 w/5GB Hd, 48 RAM -- the server
one Win98 desktop and a few W98 laptops + WinMe laptop connected to it. Laptops are on-and-off. The Linux and W98 desktop have 10/100 cards where laptops use 10Mbps cards. The switch is 10/100 Mb.
Here is the problem: transfering files between the laptops is very fast; transfering files from the W98 desktop is very fast, but getting anything off of the W98 desktop takes forever (i.e. .5MB file takes over a minute).
So, to summarize, it seems like the W98 desktop works fine but only one way.
So far I tried different cards, switched cables and tried some magic...
Does anyone think it's a network problem or is my W98 desktop a problem.
Any ideas will help (I hope).

What protocols are you using?

I am unclear as to what you mean by this.

It means that I can download anything off of W98 desktop onto any laptop quite fast, but:
- getting anything put onto W98 from a laptop
or
- acquiring any file from any laptop while I'm on the W98 desktop takes almost as long as my lousy 56k modem...

Any ideas if that's related to the machine hardware or the network configuration?
W.

Ahhh, I see. So it sounds to me like it must be an issue with that 98 desktop setup. This wouldn't be the right forum for a discussion on that matter, but what the heck. You say you've switched cables, does that also mean that you've tried different ports on the switch, you may have one port that is misconfigured. I would try busting out some sort of packet sniffer, perhaps snort, and using it to check out the traffic when you are doing a transfer, you're only going to be able to check the traffic on one segment at a time though, unless you do some really tricky stuff. Also, make sure that TCP/IP is the only protocol running on all of your boxes, NetBEUI can be noisy as all heck. Also, what kind of card are you using on that 98 workstation? There may be all sorts of configurable parameters on it that could be bogging down your network.
Good Luck, sniffing down network issues can be an SOB.
