The sitution is as follows.
I have only Linux running on my PC but I have the option of choosing 2.2.16-3 or the new 2.4.0 kernel at boot time.

Now, say I switch the PC on and run 2.4.0, with a 56k modem dials up to my ISP, OK.

Then some time later I log out from the internet. And when I try again to reconnect later it says

failed to activate the interface process XYZ crashed.

This won't happen in 2.2.16-3 only in 2.4.0, my ppp is compiled as a module and here is the output of my /etc/modules.conf file

[frank@babe frank]$ cat /etc/modules.conf
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

So I am forced to reboot, to get online OR I have to use the older kernel.

Hmmm, what's going on ?
