scp really slow

Hi. I don't know if it's normal or anything, but with 'scp', I can only transfer data from my gateway to my machine (and the other way around too) at a maximum of ~116 k/s. And if I use FTP, I can hit 800 k/s. Is there something I could do to accelerate the scp transfer rate?

Are either of the boxes really slow?

perhaps the encryption is slowing down one of the boxes.

One is a Athlong 1GHz and the gateway is a P75
