Like many other people here, I'm sure, I'm running a 486 as my gateway to the internet.

Until recently, I was pinging from my win box through the gateway to my isp's gateway at about 18-21ms on average.

Win -> Linux Box (3-4ms) -> ISP (18-21ms)

In the recent kernel releases, there's a nifty new option for if you think your CPU is too slow to handle your bandwidth. With this set, I'm now seeing pings to my ISP's gateway in as low as 6ms! Average is more like 13-19ms, but its still pretty sweet. I'm sure most of the variation has to do with other users on the gateway.

Win -> Linux Box (3-4ms) -> ISP (13-19ms)
