Ok...I'm new to Linux. I've installed Mandrake 7.2. I want to access the
internet but it keeps giving me an error saying that it can't find the
server for the website I typed in...then it tells me that it doesn't
recognize my computer's hostname, etc. I'm assuming that this isn't a
problem with my NIC but I don't know...Any insights?

What connection are you on? Sounds like an improperly configured ethernet adapter.

Have you set up your resolve.conf file?
Check it at /etc/resolve.conf
it must contain your ISPs Namerservers.

/etc/resolv.conf

domain your_isp_domain_name
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # isp dns 1
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # isp dns 2

Give that a try and see if it helps.
