Is there any chance of getting my win-modem to work in Linux?
I'm running Mandrake 7.0
and it is a built-in laptop modem...so there is no chance for me exchangeing it...
thanks...

I got my laptop winmodem working in Linux. If it's got the Lucent chip, go to http://www.linmodems.org and download and install the Lucent PCI kernel module and your winmodme might work.

The alternative is to buy a PCMCIA card modem or a PCMCIA network card and plug it into your network.

As said in the e-mail above, that modem had a lucent chipset (notice the word chip), winmodems don't really have ANY chipset (they use your processor instead) which means they can't run under linux(so-far). Try to dredge up some documentation, if it really is a winmodem then you might as well give up.

My modem is specifically labeled Lucent Win Modem. I'm running Mandrake and the 2.2.17 kernel, and my modem is working. It took some configuring and searching for the drivers but I found some that work. The only problem I have now is that my modem will only connect at 28.8, but its WAY better than nothing.

drivers and instructions can be located at http://walbran.org/sean/linux/linmodem-howto-5.html <-Instructions on installation of the latest lucent winmodem drivers... download of the drivers as well.
or http://www.linmodems.org <- They don't have the latest drivers here
