I personally like Mandrake 7.2 so far. I have tried Redhat 6.1, Caldera OpenLinux 2.3, and Mandrake 7.1.

I started to build my own Linux from scratch since I didn't like any of them, but this new Mandrake has KDE 2, and KDE 2 has lots of GUI. Between KDE and Mandrake you get an OS that works a lot like MS Windows, so I predict that Mandrake is going to take over a large share of the Linux world, and some of the MS World.

Who really has time to learn a new OS anyways? Mandrake is smart enough to see this and 7.2 is a great distro for newbies or anyone for that matter.

People who don't torture small animals use Debian.

My favorite three would be (in alpha order, not necessarily preference order): Debian, RedHat, Slackware.

But the only real system I've got up right now is a Debian one, I'm having hardware problems on my main box, but I think I will put Slack on that one when I get the new hardware.

Well... contrary to Mr. McPherson's statement, I torture wee animals and use Debian. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/eek.gif

Debian is a very stable distribution. It's package management stands above all others. A well tuned Debian system is crisp, smooth and fast.

Rod

I use slackware on my main client/firewall/router box. it allows me to do what i want, and it has BSD style startup scripts (thank god!)

i use debian on my mac for 3 reasons:
theres no macslack :-(
my mac is too old to quickly compile stuff, so binaries are better for it, and apt/deb packages are great
it's not redhat based! (rock and debian are the only 2 linux distros for mac that are not redhat based, grrrrr)

so if your computer is slow at compiling or you lazy then debian, else if your cool with the cli and like your system to be /safe/ slackware

- gorn out -

ps i use redhat at school ( unoffical computer club started to try to keep us busy so we didn't look at their server (novell), long story, 486 and redhat)

anyway and i think it's awful, we use it as a server and it's just clunky and slow, and i dunno BAD

- gorn out for real -

I'll throw in my two cents as well and say DEBIAN. Works very well for me and I like the package manager, the stability and the idea behind Debian.

The best advice is to try every distro you can get your hands on. Give them a test drive, try new ones, etc. You will eventually find one that suits you best. One you are comfortable with, or that you just keep coming back to, now matter how many you try.

im a noob and a constant reader of this board from what i read slackware and deb are the kings of the hill as far as most loved http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
deb's apt get is SWEEEEEEEEEET i saw it in action on my friends box but i currently use slackware and i have no complaints what so ever
pick a noob friendly distro or just try em all and find one that works for you

its really a matter of prefrence and what your gona be doing

but once your used to linux there is nothing stoping you from trying them all http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

As they say on slashdot:

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMandrake

7.2 is my current flavor

P.S. I would like it to be known that I have never been convicted of torturing small furry animals.

Personally I like Mandrake 7.2 for my more powerful linux box, and Slackware 7.1 for resurrecting older machines. I am about to try out LFS fairly soon though, I think it will be my favorite after that.

I have to go with Slackware. Tried almost all of them except Debian, and I am going to give it a try a one of these days.

I prefere SuSE but if you are new to Linux I'll say go for Mandrake.
Mandrake's a good newbie distro, it comes with lots of automated features as well like Drak.
The thing I like the must about drake is the customized K menu.

I personaly like SuSE, it has some customed apps but they do not interfere with the OS's lay out like they do in Mandrake and Redhat.
And contrary to what's posted in the Distro NHF SuSE is not hard to find, every single Best Buy that I've been to here in Texas carries SuSE, so does CompUSA and Microcenter.

One nice feature in SuSE its the support database that comes included with the OS which you can also find in their website.

All and all suse is a nice Distro, but I wouldn't recommend it to newbies.
For a newbie the best option I consider it to be Mandrake.

SuSE supports the following hardware:

Diamond TNT2 Ultra
Soundblaster Live
Creative ISA modem
Epox Mvp3G2 MoBo
Netgear NIC
Hauppauge TV Card
IBM Hardrive
KDS 17" Monitor

There's one more thing I'd like to say about Mandrake.

It kicks *** on laptops !!!
If you have a laptop and would like to try Linux on it, go for Mandrake. If you are a complete newbie and know nothing about Linux, don't try hardcore Distros such as Debian (Debian kicks ***, don't get me wrong) as you may run intro trouble on setup. It's installation manager may be quite cumbersome if you're a newbie.

Also I recommend you get ready to dish out a few bucks and buy a couple of books on Linux.
I recommend Running Linux third edition, SuSE Linux by QUE books and the Red Hat Bible. If you want to avoid having to pay or download a distro such as Mandrake, go to your local bookstore and look for Maximmum Linux or Linux format. Maximum Linux's had an issue that came with mandrake 7.1 (sells for $7.00 U.S), The October issue of Linux Format comes with SuSE 7. I bought Linux Format at the local Border's store as it is a U.K magazine, it sells for $13.00 U.S.
