Is it possible to network Linux and Windows computers so that a Linux computer can access the Linux partitions on another computer running Windows?

Look into a program called Samba

Samba is for viewing Linux shares from Windows, or vice versa. I think he is asking whether he can be using linux on one box, and windows on another, and still be able to access the linux partitions (from his linux box) on the windows box even though it is running windows. Is this what you meant? If so, I don't think you'll be able to do it because if a box is running windows, it can't see the linux partitions.

If you want to access windows shares from linux or linux shares from windows, then as suggested samba is what you want.

Any other thoughts

I did the same thing.. Used NFS and samba. I have samba and nfs sharing the same dir. When i boot to linux i am accessing it through nfs and when in windows I am accessing it through samba.

thanks,

I just wanted to know if it's possible to access the Ext2 partitions on a machine running Windows. Some programs which run under windows (such as Partition Magic) can actually access the Ext2 partitions, so I thought it might be possible for another Linux box to access them, but it might be too complicated.

Which leads me to my next question. If I am running Samba on a Linux box how can I tell if it is running properly? I haven't got file sharing with my Windows box working yet and I'm wondering where the problem lies. How does one turn NetBIOS on in Windows 98? Is it correct to bind "File and printer sharing" to TCP/IP? There is a check box for NetBIOS but it is greyed out. The Windows machines are sharing files, but that is with NetBEUI. Do I have to turn NetBEUI off so that I can share files with my Linux box via NetBIOS and Samba? Thanks.

Hmm, mabye if you didn't post in the Networking forum, your meaning would have been clear. There is also a program that you can used for this called explore2fs. Search for it on Google.
