I'm currently downloading Mandrake 8.0, so far I have everything in the distribution except for the RPMS folder. I know that the stuff is all the Linux packages, but what do I get and what do I leave? I have just been downloading everything entirely but I would prefer not to download 1.x GB on a 56k modem, and I'm not going to pay for a free OS. Suggestions?

go to www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) and download iso for mandrake. if you have a burner, burn it if not save to your harddrive somewhere and install from your harddrive.

Hmm...the OS is only "free" if you do download it, otherwise someone is going to want at least a little bit cash for having burned you the CD.

Unfortunately, the size of the ISO downloads alone is greater than a Gig, and the RPMS d/l is huge. I've done it on my cable modem, and it took for friggin' ever. I wouldn't even *think* of trying it on a dial-up unless I had nothing to do on my computer for the following month. :(

Drake 8 standard is only a hot $30 retail, which includes the core install CD, 2 disks of applications, and a printed (although pretty lame) manual. For that price, and the convenience of having the disks, it might be worth your while to just go out and buy the puppy.
