Startx Mandrake 8

Mandrake 8 installed,no root pass word chosen.
System boots to command promt, startx will not load KDE.
Tried Command linuxconf, Miscellaneous Services > Inital System Services to try and change Run level.
Reboot but still Startx does not load KDE.
How can this installation problem be solved with out re installing Mandrake 8.

Could you be a bit more specific about what's happening? what kind of errors (if any) are you getting?

check /var/log/XFree86.0.log that will have all the info on what's happening when you try to startx, it should make it easier to find the problem

try editing .xinitrc (in your home directory). The only think it should say is "exec startkde". If it says something else, change it to that. If there is no .xinitrc, make one with "exec startkde" in it. that might be your trouble.
