Question from a newbie here. When I go into the Mandrake Control Center, under Hostname: it says h24-71-178-42. Im assuming this is my IP address. My question is, is there a way to change what it displays here as well as the title of the login box. The login box, at the top, says "Welcome to h24-71-178-42". I want to change it and was wondering if there was a way.

your host name is different from your ip address. what you wrote down is probably your host name. I wouldn´t try changing it.
for the login stuff check /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net
Yeah, what I meant was the host name is based on my IP, isn't it?. Thanks for your suggestion.

Host names are not based on IP's....that is what DNS does...it matches IP's with hostnames and domains....I always just set my hostnames to whatever I want to call that box, and the domain of my network (which is set up through Dynamic DNS (Dial In) and let it go. But I would have to agree with error27...I wouldn't try changing your hostname until you are sure it won't mess anything up.

Hey, you probably can't get away with changing the hostname, I know i can't. My cable modem wont work unless i have my hostname set to the right value. But who knows, maybe there's a way to not show the hostname at all, and to show something else.
