apache question

i was wondering if there are any advantages/disadvanteges in compiling apache modules (php, mod_perl, mod_ssl, etc) as stand alone modules over incorporating these packages into apache src and recompiling apache with them...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if you compile them as part of apache, then apache will only pull them up when needed, instead of having 3-4 diffrent modules running along with apache and taking up cpu cycles and ram...

...that is just me, I could be wrong.
