Quick search of Google (what else?) and this is just from one of the hits. I don't know how or if it relates to your error.

Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display
":0.0".

Running xdpyinfo doesn't show the RENDER extension. I've a i810 on this
machine.

Well, what do you know? I went and re-read the README file for the XFree
4.0.3 updates. It turns out that the RENDER extension is supported only
in these drivers:

Please notice that not all XFree86 4.0.3 drivers already support the
XRender extension, so antialiasing support is limited up to now to the
following drivers (we did not test them all):

- chips (Chips & Technologies)
- cirrus (Cirrus Logic)
- glint (3Dlabs)
- i128 (Number 9 Imagine 128)
- mga (Matrox)
- neomagic (Neomagic)
- nv (Nvidia)
- r128 (ATI Rage 128)
- radeon (ATI Radeon)
- s3virge (S3 ViRGE)
- tdfx (3Dfx)
- trident (Trident)
- tseng (Tseng)
- vesa (Vesa compatibles)

So, if you don't have one of these, you are out of luck.
