I have no sound in Linux. How do I fix this?

What kind of sound card? Have you run the 'sndconfig' (http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/howto/basic/sndconfig.shtml) utility?

Konquorer says that the download links on that page do not exist. Gawd, all these problems...

Never mind, I'm downloading it. I have a Riptide soundcard that came with my HP 9694c. :(

I'm an X-windows user, and I have no idea where this application installed itself. Where can I access programs? Like a "Start Menu"???

Did you actually install sndconfig or just download it? I'm not even sure that you needed to download it, MDK does come with its own version of the app. You probably could have just run the command straightaway.

That particular app needs to be run from the console, so you don't necessarily need to be in X to run it. As a matter of fact, I believe it's actually better to run sndconfig under the CLI vs. under an Xterm in X anyway...if you have problems with it in an Xterm, just exit out of X (or hit CTRL-ALT-F2 for the next virtual terminal, run the app from the CLI and hit either CTRL-ALT-F7 or CTRL-ALT-F8 to get back into X) and run it from a pure command line environment.

As far as a 'start' menu is concerned, the big 'K' on your desktop there is KDE's version of the 'start' button under Win, not that they're trying to emulate Windows. I personally don't use KDE, but I'm sure there is a way to add your own personal menu and start whatever apps you wish from there.

I don't know how to run it from the console. What commands do I put in it? Help me please.

Ok, I've just had a bit of a look on google (http://www.google.com) and it looks as if thats some oddball winmodem/sound card combo. I highly doubt if you'll even be able to use that card under linux. Do a search for yourself, see if you can find some info on it...else go out and get yourself a SB Live or other SoundBlaster card, they're well supported under Linux/BSD.

At the command line, type

sndconfig

and hit <enter>.

As I said, I'm going on the hunch that MDK has already installed sndconfig, and according to my findings on google (http://www.google.com), I don't think you'll need it anyway. Remember, google/linux (http://www.google.com/linux) is your friend. ;)

I'm in Linux mandrake, and I hit CTRL-Alt-F1 and it asks me for (PCNAME)Login. I type it in and the password field won't let me type anything.

Thats because the Virtual Term on F1 is already being utilized by the system. You need to choose a free VT, preferably F2-F6.

All of them seem to be full. None is free. :(

I thought that if I get rid of some desktops it would free up VM's. It did not. :(

sndconfig needs to be run as root. Log in as root and try again. Let us know what happens.

I finally ran sndconfig and it said that my sound device has been disabled and that I should to into my BIOS and diable PnPOS. I found no such settings. Does it always do this? is there another command similure to PnPOS? Is there hope for me? Will I die?
