Hi, Everyone: Over on the LWN.net site, they are calling for an option to M$ and the .NET initiative. I have some feelings about that, and want to know what you folks are thinking.

Remember that little surcharge that popped up on the telephone bill, the one that would fund the program for wiring all the schools for computers? The suspician is growing each day, that, it wasn't EXACTLY for each and every public school. Actually, it was EXACTLY to fund the Internet2 project. Do you know about that? It's the one that hooks all universities and governmental agencies into their own Internet. That would mean there would be a separation of information, and a nifty way to then tax our internet [the now commercial one].

M$ is proposing some proprietary authentication protocols that would be used by our internet, and that's just plain nuts. But, apparently it's taking hold. So, LWN suggests the Open Source community come up with a vision of what our internet should look like, and what the framework should be, rather than wait to see what M$ decides it should be.

I don't know, but a Mr. Andreesen had a vision that became our internet. He seems to now have an updated vision that the internet of the future will actually be many internets at many levels. His work is reflected and described for you if you visit http://www.loudcloud.com.

I don't like the idea of caller ID on the Internet. I really don't like the idea of I2, and I have to agree with Mr. Andreesen, that the internet of the future is having many internets as opposed to M$ saying, AOL, move over, we're taking it from here to the tune of what, $50/mo, $100/mo? Your guess is as good as mine. Thanks, Tom

.NET so far has been little more than vaporware (even with their little Hailstorm release), but even so there is an Open Source effort that parallels this going on being produced by Ximian. It's called Mono, and where Microsoft has their SOAP standard, Mono will use the (totally for the purpose of mocking and isn't a real acronym) SOUP standard.

I'm still 100% confident that I will never ever have to use a non-free product to satisfactorily use my computer ever again. Paying for internet access is about the only thing I ever pay for in my daily computing experience. I am not uncomfortable with .NET, and don't think it will make this huge change.
