Help

Well lets put it this way, Mandrake 8.0 installed fine, but where i go from there is way above me head, ive read the users manual from head to toe, and i can't for the life of me find anything in that manual that tells me how to install software on my HD. I thought that ROM drives were supposed to autorun when you put in a software disc, but alas all it does is just sit there. I explore the disc and click on setup, but nothing happens. So I'm obviously missing the point. Hope you can help, I'm lost beyond comprehension

well it worked on my comp

but a probably solution is that u dont have youre bios setup properly.
when booting press the del key to come in the bios screen
then search for booting sequence
and be sure that cdrom is there and that its before HD.

Thanks for the input Pizza, still no luck.
I went and put the rom before the HD in bios, but still when i click on setup.exe when exploring the disc, it just sits there.
If you have icq, message me @ 72877279. Hopefully we can figure this out. Glad to hear its just me and not the OS, since its working for you. Let me know if you have any further info on this matter.

Thanks again

Looks to me like the user's manual covers installing new software (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/80/en/user.html/softwaremanager.html)

Ok, you cannot install windows software directly into linux. So clicking setup.exe (a windows program) will not be much help to you.

You see, linux and windows are two completly different systems. Windows programs can't run nativly in linux, and linux programs can't run nativly in windows. The only way to make this work is to put a layer between the program you want to run, and the operating system.

This layer will catch anything that the program is trying to do to interface with the operating system and translate it into somthing the current OS can understand. You might want to check out Wine (it stands for "Wine is not an emmulator" ;-)) at www.winehq.com (http://www.winehq.com)

As for installing software, there are some NHF's availble on this web page. Click the link at the very top of this page that says NHF's.

Well Strike, you must have a different version then me, my manual displays nothing about installing new software. I've been in and out of this maual for 8 solid hours now, and not one page in there says anything about installing new software. My rom drive just sits there when i put in a software disk and it wont autorun. I'm trying to install Half-Life, but when i click on the setup.exe it wont open, i can click on it all day and it just sits there and wont execute.

Is Half-Life the Linux version? As already posted, Windows versions will not run in Linux although there is Wine which works with certain Windows apps. www.winehq.com (http://www.winehq.com)

Mandrake should have a setting somewhere to turn on autorun. Have you tried a different cd to see if that works.

I don't use Mandrake although I do know they have quite a bit of online documentation available. www.linux-mandrake.com (http://www.linux-mandrake.com)

Hey Derango,
Yeah i understand the difference between the OS's, but as you know, im all new to the Linux OS, so im still confused about the "adding layer between the programs" part. Also the most confusing part is the "Permissions" man thats killin me, try to execute somethin and "poof", "you dont have enough permissions to view this file". This is gonna take awhile to register into my hypothalmus, i can see it now

Well MdWatts,
I cant really say that they make a Linux version of Half-Life. If they do I've never seen it. Most Sierra products dont display there OS version on the packaging, why? I'll never know.

There is no Linux version of Half-Life. Period. End of story. There are no plans for one either. The best you can hope for is running it through WINE.

For more info, go here - http://lhl.linuxgames.com

And "Help", I linked you directly to the online manual which explains the installation of software. I do not own a Mandrake manual. Of course, it won't help in this case because you can't install Windows software in Linux (except via WINE, and you really aren't "installing it in Linux" then either).

Oops, my bad Strike, didnt notice that link from your previous message :p Anyhow im still stuck, i'm not understanding these linux codes and snapshots, so im lost on what to do on the WINE page. I see the Tar codes, but im stumped on which one to get and how to add it into the system. Sorry if i'm being such an ignorate ***, im just so ****ing lost and my brain is fried :(

Well, first of all, you will and should feel lost if you are just starting to use Linux. It's foreign territory, unlike anything you've probably ever used. You don't get dropped in the middle of a foreign country and immediately know where to go or what to do :)

Try www.codeweavers.com (http://www.codeweavers.com) they have a release of Wine that is supposed to be really easy to use.

My best advice is to simply stick with it, taking breaks when necessary (don't get too frustrated), to READ as much as you possibly can (make it your own personal goal to find every bit of documentation that you can, Linux Google (http://www.google.com/linux) is your friend, and so are the NHFs (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf) and the the forum search (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search)), and to stay focused on the goal - write things down that you find useful, try to actually understand what you are doing instead of just blindly doing it, etc

You're not trying hard enough to make it your personal mission to find all the docs you can - http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/half-life-HOWTO-0.4.1.html#AEN156
:p (I'm only kidding, I know it's not easy at first ... but I did link to the main page of this HOWTO above)

Well HL finally started installing, but keeps hagin up and wont finish, just keeps freezing up, and im runin a Athlon 1.333GHz cpu with 512mb of DDR ram on the mainboard, would think that would keep it goin. No idea whats goin on. I did the killall -9 wine, and it said no process killed?

it might be wineserver ... try that instead of wine

Or do ps ax | grep wine and you can find out anything wine-related that is running and kill it.

'cat /etc/fstab' will list the contents of fstab. Look for any mountpoints for your Windows partitions.

Also have a look in /mnt to see if Mandrake created the mountpoints.

cd /mnt
ls -al

I would really suggest you take the time to review the NHF's here at Linuxnewbie (has one on accessing Windows partitions) and also read the user and admin online guides at www-linux-mandrake.com

Don't try to run when you haven't even learned to walk with Linux. Take your time and learn the basics first. Rushing into getting games to work with Wine will only get you more frustrated.

Good luck
