I'm trying to get my old 486 working on my home network sharing an internet connection with Windows 2000.
I have dhcp enabled. I'm using a 3COM 589C network card (the green light is on).
In /etc/conf.modules I put the line "alias eth0 3C589"
When I run /etc/init.d/pcmcia start, the card is recognized.
ifconfig eth0 shows this:
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:AA:CC:21
BROADCAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packtets:24 errors0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x300
Finally, when I do /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart, I get "can't bring up eth0, operation failed".
I don't get it. The computer recognizes my card, but won't bring up the interface for eth0. I've got the right connection shared on my Windows 2000 machine.
Any suggestions?
