I'm trying to get my old 486 working on my home network sharing an internet connection with Windows 2000.

I have dhcp enabled. I'm using a 3COM 589C network card (the green light is on).

In /etc/conf.modules I put the line "alias eth0 3C589"

When I run /etc/init.d/pcmcia start, the card is recognized.

ifconfig eth0 shows this:

Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:AA:CC:21
BROADCAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packtets:24 errors0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x300

Finally, when I do /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart, I get "can't bring up eth0, operation failed".

I don't get it. The computer recognizes my card, but won't bring up the interface for eth0. I've got the right connection shared on my Windows 2000 machine.

Any suggestions?

I can't even get my laptop to recognize the PCMCIA card. I have a 3c589 too. Like he said, any help is appreciated.

I'm probably out of order, but have you tried borrowing a friend's card (of a different type) and trying that to see if it's the card itself? I'm just offering my first thought - I haven't seen the problem myself. My D-Link pcmcia ethernet card has worked since I got it.

what kind of router are you on? I just got my ethernet working, was the card recognized? type neat and manually put in the dns yourself, the primary dns is the routers ip 192.168.0...... or watever it is and then retart your computer or network services, and then see if internet works if it doesnt enter a secondary dns,im a linux newb and i only did this today i got the secondary dns from my router tech support
