I was just given Mandrake 6.0 for fathers
day.

My wife new I wanted to try Linux. So she
picked this up.

If a different version is better, I'll get
it. I dont care about the money to get what
I want/need.

My questions start here.

What is the best dist. of Linux and why?

I have a 3 C525 machine network w/cable
modem sharing.

Can I, and how much of a headache will this
be to set up?

I want to run the Seti@Home client on these
24/7 and I really want to use the horse power
I have in these computers. What client do I
need?

What graphical front end do I want to use?

Does Linux support Diamond Monster Banshee
PCI w/16 megs? LinkSys NIC's?

I'm having trouble finding this out, when I
put the disk in the CD, I want to know what
I'm doing, and I will damnit! Mwaaahahahahah.

And you're gonna help me, shee!

Mwaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I 'm getting a bit worried about you. I think you need to lie on a couch while the nice man talks to you.

I loaded RedHat 5.1 this morning. Tip of the day, use a serial mouse if possible, not PS2.
It uses FVWM window manager by default which looks quite pretty and is quite similar to microsoft.

Once I get the ppp working, we'll be kickin' that ET *** goodstyle !!!

SETI@work now, yeehaa !!!!

Distros are only a matter of preference. You'll have to try them all to decide which one you prefer. There all only like $1.99 plus shipping at www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com) so money shouldn't be an issue. I use RedHat 6.0 primarily, because I grew up on RedHat, and it comes with Gnome and KDE, and makes switching between the two non-trivial.

As far a GUI's are concerned I like Gnome, simply because it a kind of new idea, where as KDE is very similar to the Windows interface.

I've only used Redhat and Debian, so I can't speak for or against anything else. But Redhat 6.0 is the perfect medium between simplicity and functionality IMHO.

I use Mandrake 6.0 and I like it alot. It's just RedHat6.0 with a few tweaks and bug fixes.

I use KDE because I find Gnome to be a LITTLE (really just a little) unstable at the moment, tho I do use some Gnome apps on a regular basis.

Mandrake will install both, and you can choose at login.

best thing to do is just go for it, dude.

How safe is the re-partitioning software
that came with the OS?

Is there a risk it will blow Windoz away?

Been using Disk Druid (Came with Redhat) on a dual boot system. It seems rock-solid and very easy to use. Just leave some free space on the disk using partition magic or something then boot with your linux cd and follow your nose.

I made sure I had an empty patition (my E drive)

then it was easy.

remember: to linux:

c: hda1
d: hda5
e: hda6
etc...

assuming they are all partitions on one hard drive..

I am new to linux also. I tried RedHat and SuSE 6.1, and they are both pretty easy to figure out. I am not too keen on the KDE and I like the RedHat a bit more than the SuSE.
Just my $.02

I just added a second HHD. I should start
the install tomorrow night. I do have to
learn a bit more about the network setup.

I'll be back

BTW: I can set up the swap file partition
on the second drive, right?

OK I have Linux on one computer so far.

It's kind of crude yet, I have a bunch
of tweaking ahead of me. The networks not
up yet.

I'll be back...Hmmmm...Where have I heard
that before?

Well, I had some kind of mystery problem
with my Linux partition.

Fdisk couldnt delete the partitions, so, I
dug around and found AEGDISK at ZDNet, it
worked well on all the partitions.

I had to copy Windoz to d:\, repartition C:\,
and reinstall Windows, rename Windows to
Window on D:\, copy it to C:\, boot to DOS,
rename Windows "DOH", then rename Window,
Windows. That killed 2 hrs, geez.., I really
like to tinker thou, so I didnt mind. It's
not the 1st, or even 51st time I've screwed
up.

Now, where was I, oh ya, where can I find
the Linux drivers for the Diamond Monster
Fusion cards, maybe I'm lost, but I didnt
come up with any off of Diamonds web site.

I didnt care for the 5 second Lilo deal
either, I think this time, I'll set it to
boot Linux off a floppy.

I'll be back...

I have recently bought and installed a copy of Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 with moderate success. I choose OpenLinux b/c it came w/ an install wizard and partition wizard - as I want to maintain my Win98 setup.

All went pretty well (esp. the partitioning which couldn't have been easier), except I have some problems with the sound setup, the screen setup and on installing new software - more b/c I am new to UNIX/LINUX than any real problems.

I am using KDE although I have a copy of GNOME - but haven't worked out how to install it (any tips appreciated).

PLUS there are a whole bunch of apps etc that where installed via the wizards that are destined for the toilet - but I am scared about the effect removing them will have on the stability of the system. Has anyone used kpackage for this purpose and what were the results...?
