For some reason unknown to me, Netscape is locked. I mean, I can start Netscape, enter a URL and get to the web site, but all links seem to be broken. Nothing works. When I checked permissions, all was in order. But, in both the user and root home directories, in the .netscape folder, there is a lock folder which I can't access. I'm locked out as user and as root. What applies the lock, and how can I remove it?

I used to get that problem with none of the links working sometimes. If it's the same problems I've experienced the lock file is not related to that problem. I know people cringle at me suggesting this to a linux box but it's a lot simpler then explaining the alternative, restart your computer and netscape should work fine.
May I suggest using Konqueror or Mozilla 0.9.2 instead of Netscape 4.x?

The lock file has nothing to do with it. The lock file just indicates that a user is running netscape. If you run netscape, the lock file appears, and while that netscape session is running, if you run another session of netscape, you will be issued a warning and your history/cache/etc. will not be recored.
Right now all I can say is... mess around with the properties and make sure everything is alright in there (don't use netscape any longer therefore don't remember if it has to do with anything in there).
If that doesn't work... well then you're screwed and/or someone else will hopefully help you.
Good luck!
