As far as I know the SMB Protocol works like this: When a computer is running SMB, and has shares it will pop up in the lists. cabu1966 03-29-2001, 01:04 AM Are there other shares that you want to access from the network neighborhood? If not and your running windows 98, you could get rid of the network neighborhood all together through the policy editor and still access the shares the way your talking about. If it's windows 95 you lose the ability to access those shares unless you map the drives before you install the policy. No-Idea 03-29-2001, 09:40 AM How do you hide it? Heck, I want to know how to get my Linux box to show up on my W2K network! twofoolish2b 03-29-2001, 10:41 AM To hide computers from Network Neighborhood you have to stop the Server service. From your NT Server go to Control Panel, double-click Services. From the list of Services, select Server, then click Startup. Change the Startup type to Manual, then click OK. Now click Stop to stop the Server service. That should work. Oh and for No-Idea's question about making your Linux box show up in Network Neighborhood you have to be running Samba. jaque 03-29-2001, 11:32 AM I still need to access other NT boxes on my network, so I do not want to get rid of the network neighborhood. I looked through the smb.conf file and couldn't find a thing about how to disable it from announcing itself to the network. I think it has something to do with master browsers lists. jaque 03-29-2001, 11:53 AM I just edited my smb.conf file and added the browsable = no to the [global] section. I hope that works! But it will take sometime for it's name to be removed from the Master Browser list on the NT PDC. I'll give an update if it worked. No-Idea 03-29-2001, 11:55 AM Is there some way of turning off LMAnnounce in Linux/Samba? That is what you want to do if you dont want the Linux box to show up. No-Idea 03-30-2001, 11:00 AM Yes there is an announce feature, turn that off. Also from www.samba.org (http://www.samba.org) there is a neat little utility for web admining of samba and other servers running that dont have a GUI interface. The thing is called Webmin. I found it very useful for manipulating the samba.config (along with anything else) jaque 04-02-2001, 01:00 PM hey thanks I'll give that a try! justlinux.com
