New Harddrive

I just got a new 17gig harddrive and am wanting to install windows and Linux on it. I was wondering if there was anything I should know before I got started like I have heard that the root partition has to be within so many sectors of the beginning of the drive and stuff but I am not sure what that means or how to do it. Thanks
