Ok here's the deal... I have a PIII 800mhz with 256mb RAM at work and the only OS I'm allowed to run is Windows 95 - an OS upgrade isn't planned until next summer. I develop a lot at work and win95 is the most unstable thing going. I find myself doing some of my work at my home pc.
After a rather large learning curve, I feel very comfortable with linux and I can now say that I am 100% penguin powered at home!
But the problem is my work PC... Is there a way that I can use linux without screwing with my my MBR or lilo? Does anyone know about other possible scenarios? Someone told me that I might be able to create a bootable CDROM and run linux from that.
Anyone have any solutions?? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
cotfessi

is win95 in one big partition on the hd?
if not then you can install a distro on the remaining part and use a floppy to boot into windows
no one will know unless they find your floppy or you run a server such as ftp www and not firewalled from the world

why not set up VNC or an ssh server?
if you just need the linux console. then ssh is fine...
at work, i run win 98, but i use putty to connect to my home pc to work on perl or c or something...
VNC is cool too, as it allows you to forward an X session, but if your network is slow, or your connection blows (on either end) then it can be limiting...

agreed but if they have a decent sysadmin they will see the proxy logs (if they have one) that port 22 is being used or vnc's port is (cant remember which one) and will ask questions, whereas if its installed locally no one will know

i've tried to use VNC for another project and had some trouble...
My main concern is stability. I want to be able to run linux as my OS not Linux through windows. I was reading a little bit about Live File Systems... anyone have any experience with that?

Well, if you can't mess up your partitions or anything, SuSE has live-eval cd's which run off the cd and stores the info on FAT32 partitions (I think). Or you could use *Shudder* PHAT linux.

What knucklehead put 95 on that box? You sure yer not talking about 98? If yer gonna use MS, may as well use the right MS...that's probly causing a lot of your problems. Sounds like they wouldn't notice anyways..

you could use a non destructive partitioner and then skip the lilo install during the linux setup...then just always go to win95 (unless you put your linux floppy in the drive)
or you could use something like SuSE's live eval CD...but it doesnt seem very flexsible.
