I want Linux primarily as a proxy server but just so I know... can I set it up to be simultaneously a file server to Windoze 9x workstations?
What do I need? (Samba is it?)

Yes you do need SAMBA, best of all it is free!

Visit http://www.samba.org/ to find a site near you that you can download from or find more information from.

As far as Proxy Servers, use Socks 5, and use Sockscap to make programs that are not Socks 5 Compliant work with the Proxy.

Visit:

http://www.socks5.nec.com/ for more details and downloads!

Your linux computer can be as many things as you want it to be (within reason... if you try and do TOO much it'll eventually get bogged down). However the great thing about linux is even a 486 DX2 66 can be a proxy server, a fileserver and a mailserver for a small LAN as well as a few other daemon functions as well and it'll still be very fast.
