I'm shortly building my first Linux box, but because my DSL provider doesn't support Linux, I have to keep the Win box in the loop.

My setup will look like the following when I'm done.

DSL
|
|
Win
Box-----Switch-----Hub-----Roommate's Win Box
|
|
Linux
Box

What difficulties am I potentially looking at here?

Thanks in advance!

I can't. The DSL modem/service provider has no Linux support. They won't guarentee/support connection under anything other than Win 95/98/2000.

As far as I can tell, Linux isn't even on their 'to do' list.

And since they are the only DSL provider locally and I don't want to go back to dial-up, I'm left with few options.

I've never set up dsl so you can ignore me if you choose. :)

Anyway, my ISP doesn't support Linux in any way, yet I connect with linux all the time. I think the only thing you need to worry about with linux is how you'll connect to the dsl modem. If it's pci or usb you might have problems. Some DSL modems come with there own little router that you just plug into your hub's uplink and share from there(I've got a friend with that setup). If you can get that kind, or one that you know is supported by linux, then you only need the right settings for linux and it should work fine.

You don't mention if your DSL provider gives you a static ip address or not. Doesn't matter. You can set up Linux to work with the DSL ip address provided or your provider may be using DCHP, any case either way it will work. Do a search in linuxnewbie.org and several solutions will come up. My DSL provider uses a static ip which is easy to set up. Your's may require pppoe, in which case check out www.roaringpenguin.com. (http://www.roaringpenguin.com.) Your best bet is doing a search. ;)

Ok, two problems.

1) It is a USB modem.

2) My roommate absolutely refuses to allow the Linux box to be the router/firewall. He's a Windows freak, and wants nothing to do with Linux at all. That, and he makes noises about having to reconfigure everything for his internet games.

So, for the time being, I'm going to have to keep the Win 98 machine as the DSL connection.

Yeah, well, okay, you're not going to be able to get around that one. You'd have to buy a real DSL "modem" if you wanted to plug the DSL line into your Linux box.

Yeah, well, roommates can be replaces.

Anyway, just turn on Internet Connection Sharing on your Windows box, and you're set.

1. use windows 2000 for your router box.
2. whats with the hub when you have a switch ?
3. modem.. i will break the next persons keyboard who says DSL modem (or at LEAST put it in quotes..)

1) Erg... I just got all the Win98 issues resolved... I really didn't want to go to 2000.

2) The switch is in the living room, so I can expand in there - other computers, game systems, and the like.

The hub is in the roommate's room, so he can expand stuff.

This set-up will allow the use of much shorter cables. :)

3) Right. DSL 'modem' it is then...
