okay, i've tried to follow the samba NHF and all that but i still can't make my network work! I want my Linux box to be a client (because NetZero is not compatible with Linux! :P). My server is a p3-504 with windows ME. How do i set the network?

I didn't really understand the samba NHF and well, just followed the step blindly without knowing what i was doing. So, can anybody help me out there? None of my computer can "see" each other either.

BTW, i can connect to the internet via proxy so my network "sort" of work.

Ok....
Not exactly what your goals and objectives are.
If you simply want your linux box to be able to share the internet connection with your windows box then you can use something free like analogx proxy (www.analogx.com -- i think?). When you had that setup on the windows box, you could set your proxy in netscape (edit - preferences - advanced - proxies - manual proxy) to be the ip address of your windows box. This is all assuming that everything is on the network.

The second option for internet-network connectivity would be to make windows into the gateway. You can get software or use the "internet connection sharing" provided with windows (assuming that ME provides that...98se did).
If your goal is to make your linux drive to be seen in network neighborhood, then yes, you must use samba. If you need further help with samba, just continue the post.

This NHF should help.

For the samba
Do you have a share set in windows? If so, on your linux box, type smbclient -L //windowsbox (path could be /usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient). This is something like you should see:

]$ smbclient -L //pluto
added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Password:
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
PRINTER$ Disk
HP Printer HP 832C
C Disk Win98se Drive on mom's
IPC$ IPC Remote Inter Process Communication
Server Comment
--------- -------
Workgroup Master
--------- -------

If you are not getting that to work, try and email me your smb.conf file and I will look at it (jeffh@mics.net). Also be sure that smbd and nmbd are both running. Samba seems overwhelming at first, but once you pick up the concepts, it is simple.

err... well, i don't think i have a share set in windows... what is that? the command doesn't work... i'm screwed am i? :P

Well, samba was installed with my mandrake 7.1 installation so i really don,t know where mandrake installed it....

I have linneighborhood but samba must be configured first, which is my biggest prob....

I'll send you my smb.conf. hope this could solve my prob....

Ok, to have a share in windows you will first need to goto control panel - network. You will first want to verify that under the identification tab, you have a workgroup set and a hostname. I noticed that you had LINK for your workgroup in the smb.conf file, so you would want LINK for the workgroup. Go back to the configuration tab and, you will then want to click the "file and printer sharing" button. Click both to share file and printer on the next window that pops up. Then hit ok....windows will want to go through the cab copy and restart. Then right click on the drive or directory that you want to share and choose sharing. Then it will ask what you want to name that share. I would suggest at this point until you are more familiar with this, to not use a password for the win sharing stuff.

For example, say you chose comp1 for the host and LINK for the group, and one of your shares is "cshare". The path to "cshare" would be \\comp1\cshare.

I will try to get back to you on that smb.conf file shortly.

Uhhh.... well, this really doesn't work!!!!

when i try to type "smbclient -L KICKASS"
(where KICKASS is my windows network server), i get this error message:

"added interface ip=192.168.0.4 bcast=192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0
Connecting to 192.168.0.1 at port 139

Error connecting to 192.168.0.1 (Connection refused)
Connection to kickass failed"

I tried to do that with the other 2 computers (kassisse and Poste 3) and i pretty much get the same error message. I think there could be an error with the port. I really don't know what my network port is (is there a way to find out?) and how to change it. what to do???

BTW, i will specify all my computer descrition for the rest of the peeps that reads this post:

KICKASS: the network winME server (ip=192.168.0.1)
KASSISE (winME) and POSTE3 (win98): the computer connected with the network.
linux: the linux box that i want to connect to the network (mandrake 7.1)
