My setup - four PCs hooked to hub. All could see each other under winders. I loaded Linux onto one of them (SuSE 6.4).
It has a Netgear NIC in it which supposedly maps to the 'Tulip' type (although the card's model number was not a perfect match to the supported card list.) lspci reports "Ethernet controller: National SemiConductor Corporation: Unknown device 0020" . The network setup fails during boot. ifconfig reports that it cannot find the device.
I know little about Unix and less about Linux. Please help!

It might be worth doing some looking to make sure that the 'tulip' driver the card uses is the same 'tulip' that shipped w/your distro of Linux. I had similar problems w/a CNET PRO 120 not too long ago. You might try searching on Google under the card name - that's where I found my answer.

Is this the FA-311? Its chip (or something like that) is made by National Semiconductor, which might be why lspci lists Nat. Semi ;) Anyway, get the "natsemi" driver from here (http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html).

Thanks for the input. What I wound up doing is swapping out the Netgear FA311 with an Intel p100 NIC from another PC on the network (running windows.) Now both are happy (as am I.) =^)
Once again, thanks!
