this is my current string in the /XF86Config file
protocol "ps/2"
device "/dev/psaux"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Emulate3Buttons
Emulate3Timeout 50
what do i need to change in this line in order to enable scrolling?
also i heard about a program imwheel that may be needed. is this true?

Yes, imwheel is what you need. The Z Axis Mapping, I hear, really only helps in Gnome. For anything else, you need to get imwheel.
And comment out the "Emulate 3 buttons" part so it reads "# Emulate 3 buttons".
In any case, don't take my word on it -- I've had a kensington mouse-in-a-box for a few months and have yet to get the scroll wheel to work. And I have tried a LOT of things.

Well, I haven't gotten my wheel to work yet either, but I do know you need to change:
protocol "IMPS/2"
disable Emulate3Buttons
disable Emulate3Timeout 50
remember --disable the 3 button options by putting a "#" character in front of the line.
NOTE: This assumes, of course, you are using a Microsoft Intellimouse
Also, what version of X windows are you running ?
