1. I installed suse linux 7.0
2. in yast2 it says that star office is installed
3. however, it is not on my kde desktop nor is it under /root anywhere.

Where can I find and how can I start star office?

i think it's in /opt/Oficce51 by default.
But if you just checked it in Yast2, you've still got to really install it. (that's true for SuSE 6.4, at least) There should be a link (shortcut) on your desktop saying Staroffice51, double click on it and the install program should start up.

yes by default Star Office installs itself in /opt/office5x if you are root, if you are a user and install it I believe that it tries to install itself in your home directory.
