Here is my problem. Actually I have several (mostly mental but still..) After 45 minutes I get disconnected from my isp. I am using bluelight from kmart (I know, cheesy, but it gets my online).
Some general info : 1 180 mhz system running mandrake 6.1 with 20 m of ram acting as gateway/firwall for connected windows computer running 98se. I connect (duh) with an external 28.8 ( http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif) usr sportster.
My first questions are:
1) How do I keep it online?
2) How can I setup my ppp connection so that if the first one gets diconnected it dials a secondary number with a different username and password? (Bluelight recently put a 25 hour per month cap in effect http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif)
3) And Lastly, how would I go about setting it up so that it would connect automatically upon a web request from the network behind it? Thanks for the help guys and gals!

First thought I haad was to just try using LICQ, it keeps packets going to/from the server showing who is online, etc... Anyway, it might help to keep your isp from thinking you aren't using the pc. (I can't verify this since I know my isp programmer and my connection won't time out anyway).

My thought was to setup a script to ping the bluelight server once every 15 minutes or so. If anyone knows how to do this I would greatly appreciate the info! I have tried diald and setting up ppp with the info from the mandrakeuser site, but no joy on both counts. I know very little about scripts, so HELP!!!

In my company, I'm automatically disconnected after a certain perios of keyboard inactivity. It wouldn't surprise my to discover that this is a standard thing for isp's to wait for. I have no idea how that's implemented, or what a solution would be, just throwing that out there to further confuse the issue.

That is an interesting concept. I have been using mostly the windows computer bieng masqed by the linux one. So, theoretically to get around that instead of a ping, could you send an ascii character every 15 minutes or so? I guess I should get a good packer editor or sniffer or reader or something, although I would settle for a clue.
