I finally got my Linux obox on cable internet. I got a script to run Firewalling and IP Masq.. but my Win 98 box won't see the internet, even though I can ping both ways. What are the settings for Win98 (having that set up correctly, will either make it work, or remove the possibility).
[Win 98 IP: 192.168.1.3] --- [hub] --- [(eth 1 IP 192.168.1.1) Linux RH 6.2 (eth 0 IP DHCP)] --- [cable modem]
Sorry I have mine set up as static IP. Didn't see you were using dhcp for your cable the first time. I am not sure how you define you gateway in Win with dhcp. I'll be watching to find out though...
Sorry http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif below is for future reference.
You have to set the Win boxes up [Network Neighborhood -> Props] so that the default gateway is your linux box (192.168.X.X). Also, you have to set your DNS services in Windows to be your ISP's DNS same as the linux box. I think that is all. This is exactly how mine is set up. Let me know how it goes...
I am pretty sure you can set up linux as a DNS, but I am still trying to get dhcp set up. It was easiest just to use my ISP's DNS for now.

I've just done this...I had the same problem with my wondows boxes and all my IP's are assigned through DHCP. It might be different in your case but I had to get DHCP to send out the default gateway.
In windows 98, if you select the ip by dhcp option it still lets you put in a gateway on the machine but it doesn't actually look at it. It gets it's gateway from DHCP & I just put my ISP's DNS settings in the DNS box.
So just set up DHCP to give out the gateways address as default and setup the DNS on the machines. You can even get DHCP to set DNS settings if you want http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif Zen

I have been warned to avoiding a double DHCP on linux (being a reciver from Cable, and a send to local). But if it worked for you, how did you do it? What is the best / safest way, and what should I avoid?
