No, seriously.

I've been told I should put some filtering software on the network. I don't want to deal with any commercial crap, and I'm already running Junkbuster as a transparent proxy, so I just realized I could cat a list of every porn site on the net to the end of my /etc/junkbuster/blockfile.

Anybody have one?

That's what it's really for. Really. I wouldn't lie. That's really, really what it's for.

Well, aside from the obvious references to your personal bookmark file... don't think so. Have you tried seeing how netnanny (or similar software) keeps their database?

It is situations like this (and for tightassed parents who prefer software to raise their children) that a new TLD (top level domain) of .xxx would work wonders...

Although I'm no fan of Internet pornography (at least not in an official capacity...), I think the issue of a .XXX domain raises some very troubling questions.

1. Voluntary? If porn sites using the .XXX TLD is voluntary, many will choose to use it. Some won't. If it's involuntary... well, first that's a horrible violation of free speech, second, it's impossible to enforce.

2. If you would make it involuntary, who would get to define what "xxx" is? You get into VERY dangerous territory there. Some people would want to see a museum site featuring nude Greek sculptures placed in XXX. Some would want any discussion of homosexuality placed there. If you try to adopt a legal definition, like, "A web site site charges a monetary fee to access images featured human beings unclothed or engaged in sexual activity," that would exclude free sites that could be considered pornographic (although extending such a broad defintion onto non-pay sites as well would be an even bigger disaster), and what about pay-per-view medical sites that include unclothed humans in medical diagrams. What about sites about performing breast exams, with pictures. Obviously, there's difference between "naughty" pictures and commercial pr0n... but where do you draw the line, and how in the world do you find someone qualified to make that decision for everyone else?

3. If it is involuntary, how would it be enforced? Go to http://www.allwhois.com/ . Look at all the countries in the drop-down box to the left. Each of those has control over a TLD. Are you going to get them all to band together to enforce this? Not a chance in hades. Most of the countries of the world already see the United States as "prudish", they're NOT going to like being told what they should and shouldn't be allowed to do with their TLD. Just want to kick them out of the .com's? Fine... but there's hundreds more TLDs, and remember that the Internet really IS global: most TLDs are open for registration by anyone in the world. The pr0n site owners could find a new "home" domain, such as with the Caymen Islands, which would work well for two reasons:

a. You know what the Caymen Islands is famous for -- catering to services that are less-than-legal in other countries, and getting rich doing so.

b. ".KY" is a GREAT TLD for pr0n sites! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

3. What about web servers running on non-standard ports? FTP? Windows filesharing repositories? Password-protected web servers with unknown entry points? *gasp* Usenet? Who's going to have the time, the money, or resources to check the web sites alone (consider the millions of domains registered), not to mention all other possible services? There are MILLIONS and MILLIONS of domain names -- who's going to scour them all for naughty images?

I don't think it would be a terrible idea if it were voluntary, but it wouldn't be a total solution because anybody would still be free to run a site outside the .XXX domain if he or she chose. "Responsible" porn site owners (heh) would want to use the domain, to advertise their site as being pornographic, and to keep out kids, but it's not a total solution. And involuntary wouldn't work at all, because of the impossibility of enforcing it, and the serious questions of freedom it raises. So it's not a total solution. There are no total solutions.

No, really, it's just for Junkbuster, really.

how about making a perl script to pull domain names off of a page, and then work it on some free pr0n home pages..... if you need to see what i mean, check out www.pk.com, (http://www.pk.com,) just TONS of porn sites all in one handy page.

seems like a waste though, how are you going to get EVERY pr0n addie on the net

I guess it wouldn't need to be every single site, just the most common. I think it would be impossible to get a listing of every site. "billy joe & his cuzinz house 'O fun" would probabley not get listed.

Well after searching for awhile here's what I've come up with.

The main site: http://www.squidguard.org/

And download the updated blacklist: http://ftp.ost.eltele.no/pub/www/proxy/squidGuard/contrib/

Next up installation.....
